Residence

Good Morning Universe.

Based on the ancient wisdom passed down through numerous generations, humans often strive to realize that one is not merely the body, nor the mind, nor the intellect, but a divine spirit or soul residing in this body and functioning through this body.

Through austerities the ancient masters have trained their body and mind to listen to this inner voice, spirit, and tame one's natural addictions: seeking out sensual pleasures, seeking experiences to stroke the mind's ego, etc.

I often wonder, if I am not this body, why do I spend so much time maintaining this body, obsessing about consuming nutritious food, working out, taking periods of rest, seeking natural cure when ill, etc.. This morning an interesting connection dawned upon me :)

Often times we go on a cleaning spree, trying to get the house back to order, and to a cleaner state. Personally, I do so, because the current state it is in, will be pathetic, disturbing my mind, and leaving me agitated in turn. I am also concerned that if a guest (atithi) arrives, my house-keeping skills will be poorly reflected :) In other words, my mental state and pride are at risk! It took a lot of self introspection for me to even get to this understanding :)

If left to natural course, over a period of time, any place we humans inhabit, feels and exhibits the impact of our activities, and our possessions, leaving varying degrees of footprint depending on the human and his/her activities and desires! So just like we devote time to keep our home, or the structure where we reside, clean and organized, discarding or cleaning out excesses and garbage, this body that we inhabit and where the soul resides also needs to be maintained routinely.  Failure to do so means that we risk the following: a) our calm, peaceful state of mind,  b) the pride in ourselves, reflected as self-confidence, and c) physical/structural health, sooner or later.

It is critical that every human keeps their residence and surrounding, clean and peaceful, both the intimate residence(देहः), aka our body, and the external residence(निवासः), aka our home.  Those who are on the spiritual journey of self-realization are no exception to this!

Let there be peace and happiness!   ओम् शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ।।
